Robert received his first guitar in 1958 and started taking lessons. He had been told that he was going to take music lessons by his parents and was given the option of any instrument of his choosing except the drums. Like many young boys of his era he choose the guitar because of the popularity of Elvis Presley. Robert played his first show in Fargo, North Dakota, in the 4th grade, as part of a 3 piece guitar band. At the age of 15 he joined his first band and at 18 turned pro being paid for the first time at the Black Horse Saloon on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.

From local dives to national halls to weddings, funerals, grand openings, studio recordings, musical theatre pit orchestras, after hours joints, modern dance concerts, swanky nightclubs, cool jazz clubs. You name it, he’s played it. In all types of ensemble configurations: solo, duo, trio, 4 or 5 piece, 8 piece horn bands and big band orchestras. In all types of musical styles: Folk, Blues, Rhythm & Blues, Funk, Country, Rock, Jazz, Latin, Standards and Classical.
